45“Who then is the faithful and wise slave, whom his master has put in charge of his household, to give the other slaves their allowance of food at the proper time? 46 Blessed is that slave whom his master will find at work when he arrives. 47 Truly I tell you, he will put that one in charge of all his possessions. 48 But if that wicked slave says to himself, ‘My master is delayed,’ 49 and he begins to beat his fellow slaves, and eats and drinks with drunkards, 50 the master of that slave will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour that he does not know. 51 He will cut him in pieces and put him with the hypocrites, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Who We Are

The Georgetown Secular Society is an independent organization comprised of students, alumni and anonymous faculty of Georgetown University. Our mission is to advocate for Georgetown University to become a secular institution by formally disassociating from the Roman Catholic Church and the Society of Jesus. We view our work as necessary to fulfill Georgetown University’s atonement for participating in the U.S. slave trade.

There is an urgency to address this work now. We will never fulfill the promise of this university...we will never fulfill the promise of this nation...we will never fulfill the promise of each one of us as long as this legacy remains unreconciled. This is the work we must embrace in this moment.

Join the Georgetown Secular Society

The Georgetown Secular Society is currently working to build a coalition of student and alumni organizations to join our movement. By joining as a coalition, we send a clear message to Georgetown University’s administration: We take your commitments seriously!

  1. Georgetown's responsibilities as a university: A moral and intellectual responsibility to conduct honest research and act on the findings.

  2. Georgetown's ongoing atonement: An effort that should address all areas related to Georgetown’s participation in the U.S. slave trade, including the religious ideology that motivated Georgetown during this period.
